Brain Academy, Pinewood TV and Viaplay in a Conspiracy of Silence
Charlotte Brändström (Outlander, Occupied) directs the eight episodes.
Peter Arrhenius (Welcome to Sweden) is creator and head writer of Conspiracy of Silence (Ingen utan skuld), and seasoned writers Malin Lagerlöf (Farang) and Fredrik T. Olsson (Maria Wern, Jordskott) are co-creators/episodic writers. Brain Academy’s co-founder Daniel Lägersten, is producing, with the company’s in-house producer Helena Danielsson acting as exec producer, alongside Brändström. London-based Pinewood Television is co-producing.
The show deals with Sweden’s involvement in global arms trade. Hultén plays Robert Kastell, a former arms dealer who returns to Sweden after several years in exile, determined to seek revenge on the man who tried to murder him. Co-stars include Vera Vitali (Brimstone, The Bonus Family) and Henrik Mestad (Occupied).
Arrhenius said the series tackles double standard and guilt. “The main characters are tied to each other by the fact that they all have made bad choices that they regret, but cannot undo. Sweden is a major part of the international arms industry. It is a perfect background for a story with these ingredients. On one hand, you have the country with its international reputation as a neutral peacekeeper, free of any alliances. On the other hand, Sweden is one of the largest arm manufacturers and exporters in the world.”
Wikander also believes it’s ‘about time’ to produce a thriller about Sweden’s ambitions to remain neutral that clash with its global arms trading. He told nordicfilmandtvnews.com that Pinewood Television’s involvement in Conspiracy of Silence proves that they are ‘serious’ about non-English language production.
Ira Gladnikoff, Head of Viaplay (MTG Group's streaming platform) said: "Strong stories and characters are what drives our ‘Originals’, and they are a prerequisite when we enter a new production. Conspiracy of Silence has both and it will affect the audience on many levels."
Conspiracy of Silence is Viaplay and Brain Academy’s second collaboration after the L.A.-based comedy drama Swedish Dicks, season 1 and 2. The new political thriller will premiere exclusively on Viaplay across the Nordics in 2018 and after on TV3. Ecco Rights handles world distribution and Lumiere Group has pre-bought rights for Benelux.
